The bank is the result of the merger of Bayerische Vereinsbank and Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechsel-Bank in 1998. The latter was founded in Munich in 1835 on the initiative of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Following the 1998 merger, the integration of Austria’s Bank Austria Creditanstalt was carried out from 2000 to 2002. Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank AG joined UniCredit in 2005. On 15 December 2009, the legal name of Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank was changed to UniCredit Bank AG.
